We foresee that data-rich mouse studies will be key to shed light on the general prefrontal architecture and mechanisms underlying cognitive aspects of organized actions. We conclude that this line of research has revealed cellular and structural distinctions of the PFC and neuronal activity with direct relevance to theories regarding the functions of the PFC. Samples were collected from fine dissections of brain regions from male and female mice. Towards that goal, we have generated a dataset that includes single cells from multiple cortical areas and the hippocampus. Here we review recent empirical work on the mouse PFC capitalizing on the experimental toolbox currently privileged to studies in this species. Our goal is to quantify the diversity of cell types in the adult mouse brain using large-scale single-cell transcriptomics. 2.1 Pathways from eye-to-cortex The primate retina has about 10 7 cones that send visual signals to the optic nerve via about 10 6 ganglion cells. This new Mouse 10x dataset and the Mouse SMART-seq dataset from Oct 2019 were co-analyzed to produce a joint taxonomy of mouse cell types. text of early biological visual processing, we briefly review some anatomy and functional physiology of the visual pathway from the retina to the cortex itself. The recent surge of studies of the PFC in mice holds promise for evolvement of present theories and development of novel concepts, particularly regarding principles shared across mammals. New mouse dataset with gene expression for 1.1 million cells from the cortex and hippocampus, measured with 10x Genomics Chromium 3' v2. The rodent hippocampus is a continuous structure that changes its cranial dorsal position to a lateroventral location in the more caudal parts where it eventually reaches the ventral surface of the brain. Studies in primates have laid the foundation for theories regarding the principles of prefrontal function and provided mechanistic insights. The hippocampus is the phylogenetically second oldest part of the telencephalon after the olfactory system (Chap. The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is considered to constitute the highest stage of neural integration and to be devoted to representation and production of actions.
